Studies of the Mechanism of Leukocytosis Induced by Cholera 4 Vaccine and Endotoxin from El Tor Vibrio

Abstract
The author observed changes of the leukocyte picture in normal rabbits and in the rabbits with splanchnicectomy or lower cervical section after injection of cholera vaccine or erdptoxin of the El Tor Vibrio, and in normal rabbits given sera obtained from the rabbits having a marked leukocytosis due to the vaccine or endotoxin, and made the following conclusions:
1. The normal rabbits given cholera vaccine or endotoxin of the El Tor Vibrio one or several times showed immediately after the administration a marked leukopenia usually of 4 hours duration characterized by a decrease in the percentage of small lymphocytes and an increase in the percentage of pseudoeosinophils and thereafter a pronounced leukocy-tosis characterized by mobilization of pseudoeosinophils from the bone marrow including immature forms.
2. The leukocyte response of the rabbits with splanchnicectomy or lower cervical section to cholera vaccine or endotoxin of the El Tor Vibrio was almost similar to that of normal rabbits to these substances. The leukocytosis induced by the vaccine or endotoxin, therefore, seemed to be not of a central origin.
3. The sera obtained from the rabbits having a marked leukocytosis produced by administration of the vaccine or endotoxin showed marked leukocytosis-inducing ability more effective than that of the sera of normal rabbits.
